Gum disease is a growing problem among individuals throughout the country, especially adults. With millions unaware of their symptoms, situations can quickly go from bad to worse. How can you know what to look for, though? If so many people are suffering from some form of it, are the signs obvious or obscure? Read on to discover what you should be aware of when it comes to gingivitis – the earliest stage – and how to prevent it from turning into something more serious.
What is Gingivitis?
Gingivitis is the first or earliest stage of gum disease. Considered the mildest form because its symptoms can be reversible, it must be addressed quickly if you want to keep it from worsening over time.
It usually forms when brushing and flossing are neglected, as bacteria will burrow between teeth and begin to attack the soft oral tissues. The longer this problem lasts, the greater the consequences (i.e., gum pockets, bone loss, tooth loss, etc.).
What Are the Warning Signs of Gingivitis?
The only way to know when you should seek professional help for gingivitis is to know the warning signs, which include:
- Gums that bleed when brushing or flossing
- Swollen gum tissue that is tender to the touch
- Gums that appear red or darker than normal
- Bad breath that does not go away with regular oral hygiene
How Can You Combat Gingivitis?
If you do not yet show any symptoms associated with gingivitis, make sure that you continue to practice good oral hygiene at home. This means brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, flossing once before bed (at least), and rinsing with an ADA-approved mouthwash. You should also minimize your consumption of sugar and starch, as these can cause cavities and gum disease.
If you are showing signs of gingivitis, you can reverse the symptoms as long as you commit to practicing regular dental care at home and maintaining regular checkups and cleanings at your dentist’s office.
When meeting with your dentist, they may recommend deep cleaning to remove plaque and tartar from teeth and gums, as well as antibacterial mouthwash to keep soft tissue healthy year-round.
Gingivitis doesn’t have to be a long-term problem. If you recognize the warning signs early on, you have a better chance of tackling the problem and restoring your gum health for years to come.
