Dentist in Irving Provides Preventive Care

Whether you have had your smile rehabilitated or you’ve still got the one you were born with, a preventive dental visit every six months will help you maintain solid oral health for a lifetime to come. From checkups and cleanings to digital x-rays, fluoride treatments, dental sealants, and much more, your dentist in Irving offers a wide range of preventive treatments for patients of all ages.

Our Preventive Dental Services

When you come in for a checkup and cleaning at our dental practice, we will welcome you with open arms and get right to work. Because we need your entire health picture, we’ll begin by discussing your oral and overall wellness -- are you taking any medications? Have you noticed anything unusual in your mouth lately? After this chat, your dental hygienist will get to work cleaning your teeth and gums. Digital x-rays will be taken, which allow your Irving dentist to search for potential issues lurking beneath the visible surface.

During a preventive exam, we’ll use our CariFree system to find out if you’re at an elevated risk of cavities. Some people were just born more prone to tooth decay, which we also call dental caries. Smokers and people on certain medications are at a higher risk, too. If you are, we can recommend the CariFree line of products that rebalances the pH levels in your mouth to help prevent weak spots on the enamel that turn into cavities.

Children and cavity-prone adults can also benefit from two other preventive treatments: dental sealants and topical fluoride. Dental sealants shield the enamel on the molars and premolars from the acids and bacteria that cause decay. A fluoride treatment performed at the end of a checkup and cleaning strengthens the tooth enamel to help protect it from weak spots and cavities.

Healthy Gums = Healthy Body

Gum disease affects the majority of adults over the age of 35, and the condition really takes a toll on overall health. Uncontrolled diabetes, heart problems, and memory loss have all been linked to gum disease.

During the cleaning, your dental hygienist will check for the presence of periodontal pockets, or spaces between your teeth and gums where bacteria have made a home. Improved oral hygiene can usually reverse the beginning stages of infection, but we will recommend periodontal therapy if the pockets get beyond a certain depth. Non-surgical treatment combined with an antibiotic kills bacterial buildup and prevents the risk of reinfection. More significant stages of periodontal disease may require periodontal surgery and/or gum grafting to replace lost tissue.
