I love seeing my patients—I really do. But if I’m being honest, my favorite kind of appointment is the one where there’s nothing to fix. Just a cleaning, a quick check, and a “see you in six months!”
Here’s what I’ve noticed separates the patients who stay in that easy rhythm from the ones who end up needing more involved treatment.
They Actually Floss
I can always tell when a patient doesn’t floss as often as they should (it’s a secret power that all dentists and hygienists have). Flossing removes the plaque hiding between teeth that a toothbrush can’t reach, and it’s the single habit most linked to preventing both cavities and gum disease.
They Don’t Skip Appointments
This is another one that tends to get people. Cavities and early gum disease rarely hurt until they’ve progressed significantly. Just because you don’t feel pain doesn’t necessarily mean you’re in the clear. That’s what bi-annual checkups and cleanings are for – catching dental problems before they become more serious.
They Treat Their Toothbrush Like a Treasure
I don’t mean they hoard them like a dragon. I mean they value their toothbrush as an important resource. Toothbrushes get worn out over time and start to lose their effectiveness. Instead of holding on to your brush, replace it every three months (or sooner if the bristles are frayed).
They Pay Attention to What They Drink
You’d be surprised how sugary and acidic sports drinks, sodas, and even “healthy” fruit juices can be. Drinking them too often wears down your enamel little by little, making way for cavities. That doesn’t mean you have to give them up completely, though. Just be mindful of how often you drink these types of beverages, and rinse with water or brush soon afterward if you can.
They Ask Questions About Their Oral Health
The patients who do best are the ones who ask me questions and stay engaged in protecting their oral health. If you ever have questions, always ask! I’d always rather answer a question now than treat a big problem later. Plus, I understand that not everyone has the same education about the best way to take care of their teeth. Oftentimes, patients are willing – they just don’t know how.
Preventive care all comes down to consistency. And that’s something that most anyone can achieve. I’m always happy to help those with more involved dental needs, but honestly, the appointments where I get to say “everything looks great” are my favorites because I get to see the pride on my patients’ faces. Their efforts really do pay off!
