Why does every famous actor, singer, and pro athlete have perfectly white teeth? Are they just the luckiest people alive? The truth is that practically all of them got veneers, which is good news because the exact same treatment is available for you! While the results speak for themselves, many people are surprised to find out that a small amount of their enamel has to be removed before veneers can be placed on their teeth. How much is it, and more importantly, why is the cosmetic dentist doing this in the first place?
Just Half a Millimeter
That’s how much enamel your dentist gently buffs off of your teeth that will be covered with veneers.
For reference, 0.5mm is about the thickness of a contact lens! This is done using a process that resembles a really thorough scrubbing, and thanks to local anesthetic, you basically won’t feel anything while in the chair.
But Why?
Without this initial step, applying veneers to your teeth would result in them looking too big and bulky. The ultimate goal is not just to give you beautiful teeth, but to create a smile that complements your entire face. People who see them should think you simply won the genetic lottery! Removing a small amount of enamel ensures your new teeth look fantastic and natural.
How Long Does It Take?
Not that long! Typically, the whole veneers process unfolds over the course of three appointments. The first involves a consultation where you discuss the changes you’d like to make with your cosmetic dentist.
If you both agree on veneers being the way to go, the second appointment is when they remove the enamel, take an impression of your prepared teeth, and place temporary veneers.
While you’re “test-driving” your new smile, a lab will use your impressions (along with you and your dentist’s specifications) to make your permanent veneers, which will be bonded to your teeth at a third appointment.
Altogether, a tiny amount of enamel is removed in a matter of minutes, but this simple but vital step is key to achieving your ideal result. Just like with a haircut, a “little off the top” can make a big difference in the end!
