As you sit in your dentist\u2019s chair, they will likely ask you some questions. They\u2019ll want to know how you are keeping up with your oral hygiene routine<\/a>, or bad habits you should break. While you might not have been following these entirely, you may tell a white lie to save a bit of face. However, your provider can actually tell if you\u2019re being truthful or not. Here are three fibs you may say and how your smile shows otherwise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Lie #1: I’m Consistently Flossing Every Day<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Aside from brushing, it\u2019s important you floss at least once every day. It helps get rid of bacteria underneath your gumline. While you may know it\u2019s a crucial step, it\u2019s easy to put it on the back burner and not be consistent with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many people imagine their dentist will judge them for not doing this habit, so they lie about how much they do it. You may be the same and play it up, but your provider can tell based on what they find. If they notice a buildup of plaque in the areas that flossing is meant to remove, they can tell you don’t do it as often as you say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lie #2: I\u2019m Not in Pain, It\u2019s Not Hurting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Your dental team will work to make sure your visit is an easy and comfortable experience. That being said, you may still have a bit of discomfort while getting your cleaning. Your dentist and hygienist will ask if you are hurting, and you may lie to spare their feelings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While your voice says one thing, your body is actually telling on you! When you feel pain, you may flinch, close your eyes, tighten your legs, or even twitch your tongue. Lie #3: I Don\u2019t Bite My Nails or Chew Ice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Biting your nails and chewing ice may seem innocent, but they are actually quite harmful! You may be a bit embarrassed being put on the spot when being asked about them, so you lie and say you don’t. However, these habits can cause tiny cracks in your enamel. They might not be noticeable to the eye, but they show up in X-rays your dentist takes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
