Q: A friend in Beijing that I’ve been doing some miniaturized monitoring equipment design (who has experience in the treatment of OSA and other sleep problems) with gave me the idea to look into how hypnosis might be of help. I’d appreciate some suggestions from you.
Dr. Smith: Look into sleep initiation disorders relating to autogenic sleep. Pain patients, specifically, have a rough time getting into this, which is required before slipping into Stage 1. I refer patients to a therapist for help in this area (not just pain patients), but hypnotic techniques would be helpful as well. I usually have attendees at my courses ask me if autogenic sleep is the same stage as hypnosis, but nothing I have read points to this.
